I had a very eye-opening experience recently. I was reminded how easily someone can make assumptions about your life in an attempt to validate whatever is going on in theirs. There are a few things that I hold dear – my family, my work ethic, and my pride. To have any one of those things called into question – for someone to assume that the path I have taken has been an easy one or in any way easier than theirs is incredibly insulting. Your lack of confidence shines brightly when you presume to know such things about other people.
Moments like what I just experienced remind me why I started VULGAR CITIZEN in the first place. I wanted to establish something for those who may not fit a specific mold. Perhaps assumptions are thrown your way on a daily basis and you are constantly proving them wrong. Maybe you find yourself on a journey that is entirely different from those around you. If either of these situations are the case, give yourself a pat on the back. You have chosen to be unique which is nothing to sneeze at. You should be applauded, not judged. I am from the school of thought that unless you have lived someone else’s life, unless you have magically switched bodies with that person, and ultimately dealt with everything they have experienced, your assumptions are bullshit.
I have often said that VULGAR CITIZEN is not just about selling clothing, it is about a way of life. Forging ahead despite the ignorance of those around you is one of the main characteristics this company promotes. While the clothing you wear tells its own story, how you carry yourself while wearing it can help to establish your strength when your back is against the wall.
You are you. They are them. Your path, your life, your world is unlike theirs for a reason. Own this. Hopefully, this post helps someone who was also confronted with such limited thinking to not take that stupidity to heart. I just wanted to share my experience and confirm that it happens to everyone. However, it is how you deal with it that matters.
With all of that being said, there has been an awesome response to the VULGAR CITIZEN Valentine’s Day Gieveaway! A huge thank you to everyone who has already entered and if you haven’t yet, there is still time!
